The Factory
creative director - lighting
Deep within Meow Wolf’s Omegamart installation in Las Vegas Nevada, The Factory is a whimsical triple-height space of multi-level platforms, passageways, and slides.
Contrasting the heavy steel construction of the large machine elements, the focal point of the lighting design was addressable LED faux-neon, with hundreds of meters lining the entire space.
I worked with Lucas Morgan of Enviral Design to create a custom software that allowed us to animate swirling and pulsing visuals across the 3D pixel map using a combination of timeline-based and generative visual effects. These animations bring to life the journey of “Source” which, in the story of the exhibit, is a raw creative material the factory operators distill to mass produce their supermarket products.
In addition to the LED strips, moving head lights and rotating gobos bring a massive sense of motion to the space. All of the lighting is synced to a spatial audio sequence composed by Amon Tobin, with three-dimensional audiovisual motion programmed on site in collaboration with sound design creative lead Ben Wright.
In addition to design and programming, I led a three person team on site as we navigated every nook and cranny of the space to install the lighting.
